After two days of orientation and shots in Lomé we moved north to the town of Atakpamé for the first phase of our training.  Atakpamé is a hilly town at the foot of the Togo Mountains. On the frighteningly fast ride to Atakpamé in Peace Corps vans, we saw our first grassy plains with an occasional baobab, a coconut, palm or banana plantation. Pedestrians walked along the road:
